  1. 1 balbulican Jun 11th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

Wow. On behalf of Stageleft, thanks for the props! Overturning the world order is a tiring job, and moments of recognition like this let us know that our efforts to instill revolutionary zeal are not without reward.

  2. 2 Dirk Jun 11th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

Stage left said”Overturning the world order is a tiring job”

so it would seem,I would even add, that at times it feels “futile”

  3. 3 rob Jun 11th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Figuring out who is “Left” and who isn’t feels sort of arbitrary, but if the line is drawn to the exclusion of Red Tory, then this is my list:
    1. Idealistic Pragmatist http://idealisticpragmatist.blogspot.com/index.html
    2. A View from the Left http://a-view-from-the-left.blogspot.com/
    3. Buckdog
    4. POGGhttp://www.pogge.ca/
    5. Relentlessly Progressive Economics http://rppe.wordpress.com/
    6. Accidental Deliberations http://accidentaldeliberations.blogspot.com/

  4. 4 Dirk Jun 11th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

Rob said,”Figuring out who is “Left” and who isn’t feels sort of arbitrary
    …………………….
I hear you,but I figured using Red Tory would help, you seemed to get it so I believe I was not being to ambiguous

  5. 5 The Galloping Beaver Jun 11th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

Thanks for the great plug Dirk! Appreciate the recognition.

In the unlikely event that we were selected, please understand that The Galloping Beaver would have to decline any cash award. We don’t accept money in the form of donations, advertising or prizes.

If that disqualifies us, so be it. If not, we’d be happy to participate and I’ll provide my five favourites in the next day or two.

    Cheers
    Dave

  6. 6 rob Jun 11th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

    Oh yeah, definitely not ambiguous.

  7. 7 Dirk Jun 12th, 2007 at 1:00 am

Galloping Beaver,no problem I will defiantly respect your(and others) wishes in regards to the money. But the money is not for the number one pick, the money will be awarded to the lucky participant by a draw.
If by chance(a good chance) you win the draw,I could always donate the $, to a charity,or cause of your choice.
One thing I want to make very clear is the $, is just an -incentive- to get as many fellow bloggers as possible to think about and give credit to their fellow bloggers.
Participants decide which blogs they like, for their participation their name are mixed together in a hat with all the other participant who submitted their choices, and then what ever name is picked in the draw, wins.
The actual award is the recognition one receives from their fellow allied bloggers.
I believe Peer reviewed and selected recognition adds creditability to the “award”.A sign of recognition that one’s blog is reaching others and making an impression.A way to publicize and give readers an idea of what the left blog world (in Canada) has to offer. It would also help other on the left to improve their blogging and writing skills,by example, and peer review.
I would like this “Award” be more than just another blog award, more than just an exercise in naval gazing.

  8. 8 Dr.Dawg Jun 12th, 2007 at 5:44 am

Well, thanks very much for the mention, Dirk. I shamelessly lap this stuff up. Be nice to win a vote, and a draw, too: however, while we aim, we don’t always please. : )

  9. 9 Dirk Jun 12th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

Thanks for dropping by Dawg.I hope you will participate and send in your picks.better still help get the word out.I am running this till June 25,I figure two weeks is sufficient, but only if the word gets out
Update that is from June 11 to July 02

  10. 10 Dr.Dawg Jun 14th, 2007 at 1:10 pm

A (tongue-in-cheek) blogpost is up, Dirk.
This list cannot contain a single Liberal. Liberals are, relative to each other, Left or Right, but they are not “of the Left” except in a febrile spasm of Tory delirium. I would pick Dawg’s Blawg, of course, because false modesty is so affected and dishonest; POGGE is right up there with the best of them; Eugene Plawiuk http://plawiuk.blogspot.com/ fills a gap (not a “much-needed” one, btw); April Reign http://www.breadnroses.ca/aprilreign/blog/wordpress/ is good stuff; Buckdog nips where the nipping is good; and…aww, there are so damned <i>many</i>, even with the non-Liberal filter. You, for instance.
Maybe I’ll sit this one out. It may be that such competitions are not-so-Left. I just like a bunch of bloggers on the Left and I read their blogs. Period.

  11. 11 Dirk Jun 14th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Yeah I hear you there are many good ones out.But even your decision to sit this out,has done one of the things I was hoping this “Award” would accomplish. That being, bringing other Lefty blogs to peoples attention(me included). In this case April Reigh’s blog http://www.breadnroses.ca/aprilreign/blog/wordpress/ ,I was unaware of it,more to the point I like ,thanks.
One more blog for my reading/Lefty Blog list
p.s Personally I don’t see this”Award” being so much about competition ,but more one of awareness and a chance for all we bloggers to list some of lefty blogs that each of us finds interesting. The top 3 just get a little extra attention, deservedly so,after all they made it to the top of the list because their peers(fellow bloggers) put them there.

  12. 12 Darcey Jun 14th, 2007 at 2:23 pm

    I vote for the Dawg.

  13. 13 Scott Tribe Jun 14th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

I somehow figured there would be an eclusion of “Liberal” blogs from this award.. it’s just too bad that declaration had to come from one of my own moderators ;)

That being said, I challenge Dawg or anyone here to somehow exclude “liberal Catnip” as not being a left blog (and note its “liberal, not “Liberal”)

  14. 14 Dr.Dawg Jun 14th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Darcey, my friend, I hope that wasn’t the kiss of death. )

  15. 15 Olaf Jun 14th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

    Dirk,
I’d like to second Accidental Deliberations, The GB gang, Dawg and IP. Also, I would classify Declan at Crawl Across the Ocean http://crawlacrosstheocean.blogspot.com/ as being sufficiently “left”, and he’s great. And finally Paladiea http://thestormydaysofmarch.com/ .
I’d also like to point out that I’ve come to the conclusion that the term “liberal” is effectively meaningless (although being a “Liberal” says a lot). I consider myself a conservative largely because I’m a classic liberal. (Although I’d consider liberal catnip quite to the left.)
    Anyways, Dirk, good idea.

  16. 16 Erik Abbink Jun 14th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Dirk, can I chip in another $20?

Maybe some others would like to chip in as well. Competition can do evil things to people, but let this contest be the exception to the rule.

Scott, I’m sorry but Catnip is a liberal, and there’s really not all that much “leftness” to liberalism.

My two cents, oh wait, $20 that is )

  17. 17 Darcey Jun 14th, 2007 at 4:51 pm

It was a toss up Dawg as you got some pretty stiff competition. I’ll have to throw Dirk’s name in as a second if that is allowed.

  18. 18 Antonia Zerbisias Jun 14th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

    My Blahg http://myblahg.com/ , Dawg, Sooey Says, Canadian Cynic http://canadiancynic.blogspot.com/ , Galloping Beaver http://thegallopingbeaver.blogspot.com/ , POGG http://www.pogge.ca/ , Stageleft http://stageleft.info/
I wish I could nominate myself but my blog is deader than Stephen Harper’s eyes.

  19. 19 fenderbender Jun 14th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

    Sooey’s

  20. 20 Reg Jun 14th, 2007 at 5:54 pm

I’m just here for the $100 bucks and if my name gets drawn the money will be donated to my bank account. I vote for HIMBLY http://himbly.wordpress.com/ and the only other leftie with the cajones to visit Mitchieville, Dr. Dawg (your cursed now Dawg).

    xo,

    Reg

  21. 21 Scott Tribe Jun 14th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

Thats your opinion, Erik, and I disagree with it. Social liberalism is on the left of the political spectrum – if its not as far left as the socialists/social democrats like you want it. Catnip is a lefty liberal… and she should be included in these awards.. and I ask Dirk that she is included for consideration.

  22. 22 saskboy Jun 14th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Oooh a contest -) I’ll have to throw in my answers.

  23. 23 idler Jun 14th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

sooey’s fer sure, but I’m fearful the $100 could turn her into a raging capitalist.

  24. 24 janfromthebruce Jun 14th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

    My Blahg http://myblahg.com/ , IP http://idealisticpragmatist.blogspot.com/index.html , Buckdog, Canadian Cynic http://canadiancynic.blogspot.com/ , Galloping Beaver http://thegallopingbeaver.blogspot.com/ , POGG http://www.pogge.ca/ , Stageleft http://stageleft.info/ and that’s it folks.

  25. 25 Antonia Zerbisias Jun 14th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

Nah, she’ll just buy another pair of RED shitkickers.

  26. 26 Antonia Zerbisias Jun 14th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

    Oh yeah and …

    http://www.sooeys.com/blogs/sooeysays/

  27. 27 Dirk Jun 14th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

Looks like Dawg’s post inspired some of the big dogs to drop by.Thanks for all the input, looks like this Lefty blog idea might just get off the ground yet.
As for Catnip,I like her to,but let me mull over it.In the meantime feel free to give your opinion on that or any thing else.
Darcy I appreciate the plug,it’s good to hear from you, same goes for Olaf.
Antonia,I(and I am sure many others feel the same) miss your blogging, perhaps, maybe you might reconsider )

  28. 28 willy be frantic Jun 14th, 2007 at 8:12 pm

Heck of an idea you have here. Nothing wrong with a friendly competition / contest.
I like liberal catnip, CathiefromCanada http://cathiefromcanada.blogspot.com/ , SaskBoy ( a homey of mine ), Scott’s Diatribes and StageLeft. That’s five. Now I have to drop one of them to make way for the ‘top of my list’ blog.
That would be TheNextAgenda. It’s where I read, muse and rant.
The site is currently operating under a little duress. A glitch in the renewal of the URL license has meant the “www.thenextagenda.ca” results in a ‘can’t find the server’ error. Not to worry, the site is still alive and kicking at thenextagenda.scoophost.com/ “. This is a temporary thing, I am told. Ensure that you leave “www” off the address for the temp ( scoophost ) page.
As for it’s purity as a ‘ left ‘ site – it’s your call. ( We drink on Fridays, and we don’t apologize for it )

  29. 29 Dirk Jun 14th, 2007 at 11:24 pm

A few misconceptions about these “Awards” seem to have arisen.Check out the page link below, for clarification of the purpose and method, behind this “Award”.

    http://engagedspectator.wordpress.com/the-lefty-blog-awards/

  30. 30 balbulican Jun 15th, 2007 at 3:00 am

That wasn’t a “misconception”, D., it was an error by one of the imaginary people (Max Cheung) who inhabit the Stageleft Bunker. We’re not all real over there. Sometimes I wonder about me.

  31. 31 stageleft Jun 15th, 2007 at 4:01 am

Many thanks for the mention Dirk, and I wish you luck defining what a “lefty” is these days -)

As far as the HTML thing goes give pages.google.com a try, it’s an online HMTL editor that I’ve heard is pretty decent.

  32. 32 theconverted Jun 15th, 2007 at 5:56 am

Tough choices…Definitely SL and Dawg. Declan at Crawl Across the Ocean http://crawlacrosstheocean.blogspot.com/ must be up there.
I can’t think of anyone else that hasn’t been mentioned.
    Mike

  33. 33 JimBobby Jun 15th, 2007 at 9:36 am

Whooee! I like Stageleft, fer sure. Red Tory http://redtory.blogspot.com is a favourite on accounta ol’ RT gets some dang good gabfests in his comments department. Big City Lib http://bigcitylib.blogspot.com/ is another good boog. Anna Marie at Verbena 19 (
http://verbena19.wordpress.com/ is an inspiration. The Galloping Beaver (
http://thegallopingbeaver.blogspot.com/ is informed and authoratative on military matters. Then there’s Far and Wide http://farnwide.blogspot.com/ where highly readable and erudite Steve V. holds court.
That’s just a few o’ the lefty boogs I try to visit everyday.
    JB

  34. 34 Antonia Zerbisias Jun 15th, 2007 at 11:26 am

Thanks Dirk but my blogging days are over.

As of this week, i am no longer media columnist for the Star either.

Too much bleeding from the head and not enough drywall.

My new gig is social issues/cultural trends. Sometimes serious, sometimes not. It’s what i wanted, proposed, begged for.

  35. 35 dirk Jun 15th, 2007 at 12:01 pm

SL said:”Many thanks for the mention Dirk, and I wish you luck defining what a “lefty” is these days :-)”

anything but Liberal.Over all though I think people are figuring it out. Most of the blogs submitted would meet my “definition” of left.
Once we get past this first selection process and the “lefty blog”list is up loaded
the criteria(sufficient for the purpose) of Left should be fairly clear but you are right defining “the left” is not an easy proposition. But hey,Progressive or Liberal falls short,at least for me,both labels cover to much territory

  36. 36 Dirk Jun 15th, 2007 at 1:50 pm

Antonia Z said….”My new gig is social issues/cultural trends. Sometimes serious, sometimes not. It’s what i wanted, proposed, begged for”….
Thats good you had a say on the matter, doing what one loves or finds interesting,is the only way to go

  37. 37 Dirk Jun 15th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

A few more Lefty I would like to add to the rolls
Relentlessly Progressive http://rppe.wordpress.com/ , Polly of Marginal Notes http://marginalnotes.typepad.com/pj/ ,and Scott of A Canadian Lefty in Occupied Land http://scottneigh.blogspot.com/ and Devin http://www.devinjohnston.ca/

  38. 38 stageleft Jun 15th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

You are, however, still with the Star — yes?

  39. 39 Antonia Zerbisias Jun 15th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

Yes, SL, I am. Nobody else will have me.

    -)

  40. 40 leftdog Jun 15th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

Humbled and honoured to see Buckdog nominated here. Thanks!!!!

  41. 41 stageleft Jun 16th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Social issues/cultural trends is a good gig, lots going on there – but me thinks you are being a tad too polite about your writing AZ, and even if it were true you’re always only one quick email away from an author username & password in the bunker — Lily would be pleased.

    Come the revolution!

  42. 42 Antonia Zerbisias Jun 16th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

That was too cryptic for me Stage.

If you care to elaborate, I am at az@thestar.ca

  43. 43 bigcitylib Jun 19th, 2007 at 10:07 am

Thanks for the mention. If I’d know I was going to be nominated for something so prestiguous, I probably would NOT have chosen this day to write about Ten Nugent.

  44. 44 Red Jenny Jun 19th, 2007 at 11:01 am

ooh, fun. Here’s some of my favourites for nomination, in no particular order: A Canadian Lefty in Occupied Land, Unrepentant Old Hippie, April Reign, Marginal Notes, Thinking Girl, The Vanity Press, Paulitics, Rolling back the tide of extremism.

Ok. I’ll stop now. I could go on. But I won’t.

  45. 45 Scott Tribe Jun 19th, 2007 at 11:10 am

I’m disapppointed to see those there’s a measuring stick being applied here where “liberal” or “Liberal” blogs are somehow not a “lefty” blog
… Liberals encompass a big ideological group.. and to say none of them are “left” is typecasting by those who have an axe to grind, and I am sorry to see partisanship and ingrained bias is being applied here, by the looks of things.

  46. 46 Candace Jun 19th, 2007 at 11:36 am

Well, my favorites to visit for alternative viewpoints have all pretty much been mentioned, but here’s my vote(s) anyway:

    Stageleft et al
    Dr. Dawg
    Mike/RationalReasons
    Idealistic Pragmatist
    Accidental Deliberations

  47. 47 Dirk Jun 19th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Bigcity Lib said…”Thanks for the mention. If I’d know I was going to be nominated for something so prestiguous, I probably would NOT have chosen this day to write about Ten Nugent”…
are you making fun of me,or this little exercise in “Naval Gazing”…. ;)

  48. 48 Candace Jun 20th, 2007 at 12:11 am

How bad is that? I realized, mid-day, that I’d neglected to mention Lord Bump et al of Wingnuterer(sic) fame.

    thewingnuterer.blogspot.com

Geez, now I’ll have to look twice at every squirrel I pass before I can turn my back on it safely.

  49. 49 Scott Jun 21st, 2007 at 1:52 pm

First, it’s cool to have been mentioned in this thread, so thanks…

Second, I’ll come back later and leave some names/links, though frankly I think most I would suggest have already have been mentioned…

And third, though setting boundaries is always a tricky process, and there is certainly room for lots of debate about where exactly the boundary between “liberal” and “left” lies, I completely agree that there is value in preserving the two as distinct terms. The tendency within U.S. mainstreamish political discourse to use them as synonymous drives me batty. Though “left” in the way I would use these terms remains a hodgepodge of different analyses and approaches, “liberal” has quite a distinct history and tradition associated with it and the desire of the actual lefts to be seen as distinct from that history and tradition is not new, not clique-based axe-grinding, but something of very long standing and based in core ideas about the world of the traditions in question. The fact that liberalism picked up some social democraitc ideas in the ’30s in the U.S. and a little later here in Canada does not fundamentally change that, especially as dominant strains of liberalism in both countries — again, with the U.S. happening earlier and more completely — has been shedding those additions in recent decades, under the banner of “neoliberalism.” So I hope people who identify with the liberal tradition don’t see this desire by the left to be seen as one or more distinct groupings as some sort of personal animus…it is about the eternal struggle for labels that reflect the actual social, political, and what-have-you landscapes in meaningful ways.

  50. 50 Dirk Jun 21st, 2007 at 2:33 pm

Scott thanks for dropping by.I especially appreciate your comments. You coundn’t have said it better
….”there is certainly room for lots of debate about where exactly the boundary between “liberal” and “left” lies, I completely agree that there is value in preserving the two as distinct terms. The tendency within U.S. mainstreamish political discourse to use them as synonymous drives me batty. And please do leave your choices.Without a minimum participation level the “awards” would be rather meaningless.I am hoping that at least 50 Cnd bloggers take part.So again please do participate

  51. 51 Scott Jun 21st, 2007 at 2:34 pm

Okay, I’m back from getting dinner on the stove and I have had a few minutes to think about it. I would mention a few that have already been mentioned, like Marginal Notes, Paulitics, Red Jenny, and April Reign.

I would definitely also recommend One Tenacious Baby Mama and Sketchy Thoughts. Justin Podur doesn’t update The Killing Train often, but when he does it is good stuff. I have encountered them more recently, but I would also recommend radical indigenous blogs that originate within the canadian state, like Liberated Yet? and RadicalIndian.

  52. 52 Scott Jun 21st, 2007 at 2:43 pm

Oh…and I would add that Darkdaughta at One Tenacious Baby Mama has a powerful analysis of the politics of her writing being included in online spaces without her express permission…I think it would be important to seek permission from her and from anyone else before including them on whatever lists or in whatever contests result from this post…

  53. 53 Dr.Dawg Jun 24th, 2007 at 7:19 am

I would leave out anyone who posts in that ridiculous white-print-on-black-background format. It’s simply painful to read, and these old eyes have finally had enough.

Gotta throw in a pitch for Shmohawk’s Shmorg, which in the last couple of months has become the BEST source of commentary on Aboriginal issues in any medium in Canada. The dude can write.

    http://shmohawk.blogspot.com/

  6. 6 Dirk Jun 19th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Balbulican-I totally agree with your assessment of,’Shmohawks Shmorg’One thing is for sure there are not enough Canadian blogs discussing Indigenous issue.Even among the “left” indigenous issues are rarely mentioned never mind discussed.
The left(general left) rarely stand in solidarity with First Nation peoples.Go to any FN demonstration or land claims rally etc,one will see very few non-indigenous faces.
To me any way, some kind of solidarity between the “left” and FN peoples seems a no brainer…

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned “Thought, interrupted by typos,” or “Canuck Attitude” yet. Please give them a nod for me. I know there are others—I’ll be back with more nods!

    Galloping Beaver

    Verbena 19

    Red Jenny

ok that’s the first batch 😀

  17. paulitics Says:

Wow, this is a great list.

Most of the blogs which I frequent have already been mentioned, but nobody’s listed Doug’s blog “If there is hope… ” (http://theproles.blogspot.com/) which absolutely deserves a nomination. So consider this my nomination for Doug’s blog.

Thanks to both Red Jenny and Scott Neigh for nominating me. Sadly, I can’t reciprocate because somebody’s already beaten me to it (you popular bastards! lol).

sure you can, remember the number of nominations each particular blog gets decides the order i.e 1,2,3…..

  22. skdadl Says:

Has anyone mentioned Impolitical http://impolitical.blogspot.com/ I just wish he would let us leave comments — I could gossip away at him all day.
I also wish to renominate catnip http://liberalcatnip.blogspot.com/. I appreciate Scott’s warning above about keeping the boundaries with classical liberalism clear, and the American usage of the term drives me bananas too, but I think that catnip’s practice is pretty clearly left independent. She could call herself Flower if she wanted to, and I would still read her. Like not a few of the rest of us around here, she spends a lot of time watching the imperial centre, which I think is an important thing for lefties to do, so it’s not surprising that she might locate herself in terms that American readers — and she gets them — can grasp.
There’s also someone new I just read yesterday who is very groovy — if I can remember, I’ll be back.
Otherwise, we’re kind of shy and repressed at our place, but always grateful for the good company.

  24. leftyblogs Says:

It’s good to have a member of POFF’eh drop by.Was hoping they would.
And I see skdadl has nominated Liberal Catnip. Now there has been a bit of a disagreement if Catnip can be considered a “Left”.
    http://liberalcatnip.blogspot.com/
I promised to think about it,so what the hell if POGG’eh considers Liberal Catnip of the left thats good enough for me.So nominate away…

  25. A Touch Of Reason Says:

I have an idea. Why not head over to a very widely read “far” left American blogger Marisacat and ask her if she considers Liberal Catnip a “lefty” blogger? After she laughs because of the ridiculous question, you will find your answer. It’s actually a joke that this is even in question.

Well if you actually read the F & Q you would see that the debate on this very question is depends on who one talks to.I have no problem with Catnip but some bloggers think she is more liberal than left. But seeing as she is not a part of the Liberal blog community nor does she have Dion’s face smiling from her blog, her blog meets the “definition” of “left”.
So as far as I am concerned the question is settled.
But as for POGG’eh choice of “Impolitical”,I have to say he is “left/center Liberal”,after all the guy has Dion’s face prominently displayed. No self respecting “Lefty” would have Dions face on their blog

  28. redtory Says:

Labels… ugh. Anyway, thanks for the mention.

  29. leftyblogs Says:

I hear you Red Tory.Labels belong on jars not people. But what the hell. This little exercise is more about trying to give the label lefty blogger a bit more definition. And I believe that so far, things seem to be working out most of the blogs nominated all share a very similar political viewpoint.
That being most lefty’s would consider both the Liberals and Conservatives as flip sides of the same coin.

  31. liberalcatnip Says:

Wow. So have you all decided if I’m a lefty yet? I had no idea I was so controversial! 😉

This is my favourite comment though – by skdadl: “She could call herself Flower if she wanted to, and I would still read her.”

Lost of cheesecake for you sweetie! 🙂

And leftyblog, I’m not even sure I know what this means: “I have no problem with Catnip but some bloggers think she is more liberal than left.”

    ??

What’s “left” then? Communism? I do have my political compass score around here somewhere if that’s necessary to show my “lefty” creds.

  34. leftyblogs Says:

Catnip said…And leftyblog, I’m not even sure I know what this means: “I have no problem with Catnip but some bloggers think she is more liberal than left.”….
So true,at the time some there was a “discussion” if you were liberal; or “left”.At the time,I assumed your blog was displaying a Liberal blogger logo or Dions face or both. But I was mistaken, and should have rechecked.
As I said before I believe their is a difference between Liberal and lefty.A lefty would see both the conservatives and Liberals as flip sides of the same coin
The purpose of these “Awards” is to help differentiate lefty’s bloggers from Liberal,or at least give reader an idea of what lefty means,at least sufficient for the purpose of “the lefty’s”.
As for left I would consider anything from communist,anarchists,ant-capitalist,anarcho-syndicalist,NDP Socialist Caucus, some anti-globalists etc, that said I still do not agree with all or some of the viewpoints of the “leftys”I just listed.Basically anybody who understands the need for some communal or community control
    Who’s not a lefty,well conservatives,liberals and many so called greens,even some NDPer’s.
Its a hard task master to define left, but for the purposes of these “Awards” I think a “definition” has been understood.
Other than 3 nominated blogs-(Red Tory,Big City Lib,Impolitical; all excellent blogs but definitly Lib/center)- ,all the blogs nominated to date, fit with the idea I was trying to get across.
    Sorry for any confusion,

  35. tovorinok Says:

  36. verbena19 Says:

I agree with Scott Tribe. Liberal Catnip definitely deserves the nomination, so I nominate her.

    Regards,
    Annamarie (Verbena-19)

  37. verbena19 Says:

P.S. I nip for Catnip too! Love ya! ~ annamarie 🙂

  38. liberalcatnip Says:

Thanks, leftyblogs but there is a difference between “Liberals” and “liberals”.

    Who’s not a lefty,well conservatives,liberals and many so called greens,even some NDPer’s.

Then you’re saying I’m not a “lefty” because I identify myself as a “liberal”? In my mind, “liberals” are more left than “Liberal”. And how are some NDPs not lefties?

I think I’m more confused about this than before now.

  39. leftyblogs Says:

lib catnip said…”Then you’re saying I’m not a “lefty” because I identify myself as a “liberal”? In my mind, “liberals” are more left than “Liberal”.

No thats not what I am saying.Depends what you mean or how you use the term liberal.
i.e…If your are using liberal to mean you support the liberal party,or if you are using liberal in the general sense of the word.

Lib catnip said…”In my mind “liberals” are more left than Liberals”…

    Exactly

Lib catnip said…”And how are some NDPs not lefties?”….

Well I could use Bob Rae as an example.

But before we get carried away here let me say again the “definition” of “left” is not something carved in stone.
But if one looks at all the blogs nominated to date they all have a very similar outlook,an outlook that most would define or call “left”.
So people do seem to understand ,the manner in which I am using the term “lefty”.
As I said other than 3 blogs,Red Tory,Bigcity Lib,and Impolitical all others fit with my definition of “left”,again sufficient for these Awards/lefty blog index
For the purpose of these awards, any blog that self defines as left is in it’s self sufficient in most cases.
Again I draw the line at those blogs, even though they might self define as “left”,or “liberal”,that belong to the lib blog roll or support the Liberal Party.
There is a difference between me and my views, which can also fall under the word liberal(when used in general),than someone who supports the Liberal party and who could go on to say or identify as being liberal.
Read Scott’s remarks #49,his gives a much clearer idea of what I mean by “left or a lefty”…

  42. Morgan Says:

    Dipper Chick gets my nomination.

The freshest sheet of juicy Canadian lefty tidbits out there. This blog deserves to be in the draw.

  43. leftyblogs Says:

Morgan said…”This blog deserves to be in the draw”…

The draw is just a participation incentive, your blog/name(Morgan) now qualifies for the draw All nominated lefty blogs(i.e Dipper Chick) get listed here. With the top ten(most nominations)being listed in order e.g 1st 2nd 3rd 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 to be decided once all nominations have been received..
The 1st 2nd or 3rd place blogs get Lefty Award badges Ist,2nd,3rd,which they can paste to their blog, and the acknowledgment of their peers
Again the $100 draw is a participation incentive nothing more.
the draw will be held once nomination period closes or minimum participation level has been reached, which ever come first.

  47. Saskboy Says:

Kevin, in short, Lefty means that if someone has the Liblogs blogroll, they aren’t qualified as a “lefty”.

I’d however, like to nominate Kevin’s blog http://www.desmogblog.com/ if you’ll consider it.

  48. leftyblogs Says:

Saskboy said…”Kevin, in short, Lefty means that if someone has the Liblogs blogroll, they aren’t qualified as a “lefty””…

I don’t understand why you have such a problem with my definition of “lefty”.But the fact is Liberal party supporters are not “leftys”.Dion is not left, his party supports business interests more than not.The Greens are not left, sure they have an environmental policy but their program is socially conservative.
Again check out the blogs nominated to date, you will notice a general trend or line of thought/reasoning t that are common to all.A thinking that most would consider “left”,hence Lefty Blog.

That said,I am not fond of applying labels to people,I use “lefty” more as a general category, rather than a label.People are complex and often ones political ideals can not be shoe horned or simplified so as to be labeled left, right, center, etc….

  49. leftyblogs Says:

As for SBoys nomination “desmogblog”,even though it is only discusses the enviro and one gets no sense of the blogger’s social/political views, why not.
Ones stand on the environment does not necessarily a “lefty” make.Even some on the right understands the need for at least a relatively healthy environment 😉
Thanks for participating SaskBoy,your name will be included in the draw.

  50. deBeauxOs Says:

  53. leftyblogs Says:

  54. leftyblogs Says:

croghan27 and deBeauxOs -I appreciate your participation, but this is a peer reviewed blog Award.Participants must be Cnd bloggers with active blogs.
The Lefty’s might be opened up to the general public at some future point, but for now it is limited to (Canadian) bloggers and blogs.

  56. deBeauxOs Says:

In case you had not noticed, I am a blogger at Birth Pangs.

  57. fern hill Says:

Yes, indeedy, deBeauxOs is a Panger. And how come dedicated commenters like Croghan27 are not allowed to nominate? Commenters are our audience, or are we just a tad too self-involved, hm?

Oh, and because shamelessness seems part of the culture :winkie smiley:, I’ll add Birth Pangs to my nomination list.

  58. leftyblogs Says:

Sorry deBeauxOs,I didn’t notice. The over sight has been corrected.

Fern Hill said…”And how come dedicated commenters like Croghan27 are not allowed to nominate?”…

Perhaps in the future these Awards might evolve in that direction. But I figured there are so many blog awards out there that I would try a peer reviewed “Award” and help “proper lefties” stand out a bit.Why not let other lefties nominate their favorite fellow lefties.

I believe we of the left need to be understood as having very knowable and clear political ideas/ideals.These ideals are just not clear enough when we are lumped together under the very general categories of liberal or progressive.
Lets face it there is a difference between one with liberal beliefs and say an anarchist,anarch-syndicalist,communist or one who self defines as being of the socialist left.
That said even among say socialist, there is a wide variance of opinion, but over all there a very common ideal that is shared by all the various lefties.

That being communities and ordinary people are the ones that make the world go round. And as such ordinary people/working class need to share(democratically) in defining the conditions of their lives.
Another common idea we lefties share is the belief that capitalism/private property is the cause of much of the grief in this world.
Again that said, some on the left feel capitalisms needs to be controlled or reformed other believe it must be abolished.
This is my understanding of what it means to be of the left,I like many of the blogs nominated are more than just bloggers with a liberal/progressive outlook.
When people come to my blog I want them to know my basic political/social orientation.
These awards are an attempt to publicize those bloggers and blogs.
While at the same time giving readers a one stop page/index ,listing and linking Canadian lefty blogs.
